There was the scent of petrichor and something floral on the air as Jethro hammered in one of the last planks for the section of fencing he was trying to rebuild. The mud-slick ground made the work a pain in the ass, but not entirely undoable as the Miltank nearby passed him another nail, [break][break]

“Thanks, sweetheart,” he murmured fondly as he quickly slotted the nail to hold between his teeth while he tried to prop up the next plank of wood. [break][break]

He really ought to get more Pokemon with opposable thumbs and the sense to use them. Beulah was a little sharper than the average head of cattle, but Lord knew that Titus couldn't do a damn thing to help with work like this. The only thing the old bull was good for was occasionally hauling a plow and sleeping in the shade, which, as it turned out, was exactly what he was doing at the moment. Jethro side-eyed him with a withering glare, but the Tauros just snorted defiantly in reply, chewing his cud without a care in the world. [break][break]

It was then that a bit of movement from somewhere beyond the bull caught Jethro's eye. He muttered a few curses, passing the nail back to Beulah as he secured his hammer to a loop on his belt, rising to stand fully as his most recent piece of heat-treated lumber fell into the muck. Cold eyes narrowed as he squinted, trying to discern just what the hell was approaching his property line. Was it a person? A Pokemon? [break][break]

As it turned out, it was both. God damn trespassers; probably one of the local kids coming to gawk at their surly new neighbor. Jethro nodded to the cow as he took large strides to approach the figure, [break][break]

“Hey!” he barked, sharp and clear through the wet spring air, “This is private property, friend.”

"What sort of wild Zangoose chase are you taking me on?" BARNABY FINCH called out to his URSARING from his saddle, a few paces back from where the bear snuffed at the ground. [break][break]

They'd gone off the main trail awhile ago in search of HONEY for his garden. For one reason or another, pollinators hadn't seemed interested in the place lately. He figured a little sweet attractant might entice a few to his berry trees.[break][break]

And in pursuit of that... maybe they'd gotten a little lost. But it was fiiiine. This was the middle of bumfuck nowhere, after all, somewhere outside of Fallarbor Town. There was no one around to care if he took some HONEY for himself. Right?[break][break]

Wrong. A surly-looking cowboy with a sharp tongue and an even sharper jawline definitely seemed like he cared.[break][break]

"Whooaa," Low and easy, he brought his RAPIDASH to a stop a few feet from the half-broken fence line. [break][break]

"Sorry about that! I think we're a little... lost?" Barnaby gingerly rubbed the back of his head, feigning ignorance while analyzing the situation he now found himself in.[break][break]

Hm. This tall drink of hillbilly probably didn't watch daytime television, so wouldn't know he was in the presence of a B-list celebrity. His loss. But also an annoyance for BARNABY FINCH, who usually coasted by on his renown. [break][break]

Meanwhile, Bernadette hadn't registered her master's preoccupation and simply continued to scramble over the fence — knocking over a few boards in the process — in order to reach her prize: the tree that a certain TAUROS happened to be resting beneath.

Lost, huh? That sounded about right. The younger man certainly looked like he didn't belong to these parts, with that glossy, flaxen hair that shone almost gold in the sunlight, riding upon a pale horse swathed in shimmering silver flame. He looked more like a fairy-tale prince, as absurd as the thought was, and here was Jethro, playing the part of the lowly peasant in an unfamiliar kingdom. [break][break]

But in spite of himself, Jethro felt his agitation lessen a little as he regarded the stranger. He could never turn away a person in need, especially when it was a pretty little thing lost in the wilderness, [break][break]

“Whelp, the good news is, y'ain't far from the main road,” he replied, his voice now void of that biting edge of suspicion, “If ya just follow the drive from that little house over yonder, then you'll- hey!” [break][break]

Before Jethro could finish, the Ursaring accompanying the other man climbed over (and quite nearly destroyed) a half-built section of fence and scrambled towards the tree that Titus dozed under. It wasn't until the bear was almost upon him that the bull finally jolted from his rest, hastily scrambling to his feet and lowing angrily at the other Pokemon. The Miltank at Jethro's side called cautiously in reply; knowing her, she was probably sick with worry at the thought of the two creatures coming to blows. [break][break]

Jethro sighed and rubbed at one of his temples. If it wasn't one thing, it was another.

Was this cowboy from Hoenn? His accented voice was like smooth molasses to the ears; there was something earthy and thick about it, reminiscent of misty hills and oiled leather.[break][break]

Due to this, BARNABY FINCH was too busy drinking in Jethro Haig's deep twang to notice the mischief his URSARING was getting up to until it was literally too late. Angry bellowing and an exasperated exclamation eventually clued him in, though.[break][break]

"Bernie!! Bad bear!" Barnaby immediately chided as he slipped off his horse and jogged closer to the fence where Jethro Haig stood.[break][break]

By this point, Bernadette was now firmly standing on her haunches with her massive front paws braced against the trunk of the tree. Loud snuffling at the air hinted that there might be something sweet higher in the branches.[break][break]

"I think she smells some honey up there... sorry!" Though it was a weak explanation considering the damage done, Barnaby continued with a placating,[break][break]

"I can return her? And... maybe help fix the fence she broke?"[break][break]

Normally he'd simply sweet talk his way out of annoying situations like this and make the first move to exit, but for some reason he found himself wanting to linger.

The offer of assistance in repairing the fence lit another angry spark of agitation in Jethro, because he was fairly convinced that Prince Charming wouldn't be any better at helping him build the structure than Beulah had. But hell, it sounded like an earnest gesture, and Jethro was quite short-handed. So he just sighed, looking to the bear and back to the younger man, and let the tension that had begun to work its way to the hard set of his jaw dissipate, [break][break]

“Might just take ya up on that,” Jethro replied with a curt nod, “First things first; getcher bear back, 'cause her breaths just gonna get the bees all riled up.” [break][break]

Not that he was particularly experienced with bees or Pokemon that resembled them, but he had heard once that the CO2 on an exhaled breath triggered some sort of fight response, which was probably why a few members of the hive had already started to descend from the tree and swarm around the Ursaring's eagar nose. Titus bellowed once more, jeering from his spot in the peanut gallery, until Jethro shot him a scathing glare. It was enough to cow the Tauros' indignation for the moment as the bull slunk away like a scolded child.

Curious COMBEE buzzed around near the canopy of the tree, but Jethro Haig was right — it wouldn't be long before they discovered the ravenous bear below. Intervening before yet another aggravating situation could occur, BARNABY FINCH retrieved Bernadette's Luxury Ball from his pocket and returned her to her capsule. For a moment, all was quiet.[break][break]

"There we go," The apparent Prince sighed with relief upon noticing the COMBEE begin to return to their hive. With that crisis averted, he turned to help repair the damage that had already been done.[break][break]

"Well. Time to put me to work, then." [break][break]

Flashing his iconic, television host smile — bright and personable and disarming — BARNABY FINCH gestured to the fence before them.[break][break]

"What's first?"

A Luxury Ball, huh? A little rich for Jethro's blood, he thought with some consideration as the Ursaring was recalled, but just about everything about the other man was. Especially that smile, almost unnerving in how charming it was, [break][break]

“I'll startcha off easy,” Jethro replied, gently taking the nails from the now at ease Beulah and handing them to the other man, “Just hold onta these for me, and pass me one when I ask for it.” [break][break]

With that, Jethro moved back to kneel low by the fence, propping up a fallen panel on a bent knee and taking a nail from the stranger. As he hammered the board in place, he suddenly spoke up, [break][break]

“What's yer name, boy?” [break][break]

The question came out more suspicious than he had intended, his voice low and rough with wary caution. Maybe he ought to ease up a little; the other man had offered to help him, after all, [break][break]

“Mine's Jethro. Just moved ta these parts.”

"Easy enough." Handing the guy a few nails? Child's play. And, uh, actually kinda boring, too. [break][break]

Fairly quickly Barnaby found his interest shifting from wood and iron to the collar of Jethro Haig's shirt. Sweat trickled down from the nape of his neck, slipping below the hem to areas undiscovered. Thoughts drifted, his imagination much more exciting than a few broken boards.[break][break]

Preoccupied as Barnaby was, after a few minutes of work Jethro was unfortunately left with an empty hand, waiting expectantly for a nail that didn't come. Not until the cowboy's rugged voice pulled at Barnaby's attention.[break][break]

"—hm? Oh, my name?" Was that a blush on his cheeks or just redness from the heat?[break][break]

"Barnaby Finch." Perhaps he could tell from the faint Kalosian accent, but Barnaby wasn't from around here, either. Something they had in common.[break][break]

"What brings you and your family to Hoenn of all places, Jethro?" Barnaby asked, curious to see if anyone else had accompanied him on his little ranching endeavor.

The lingering gaze and the slight flush to the younger man's face weren't entirely lost on Jethro. He quirked an eyebrow with some curiosity as the man he now knew as Barnaby handed him the next nail, [break][break]

“Pleased ta make yer acquaintance, Mister Finch.” [break][break]

And that lilt of Kalos on his tongue didn't escape Jethro's notice either, but that potential line of inquiry never stood a chance against the question now posed to him. Curiosity quickly soured to bitterness, and Jethro made sure he returned his attention back to the final nail he was hammering as he formulated his response, [break][break]

“Ain't got no family.” [break][break]

His brow furrowed as he struck the head of the final nail with more force than was necessary, [break][break]

“Just me an' the critters. I keep ta myself, most days-” [break][break]

Maybe he shouldn't have revealed his very intentional solitude to someone who could've very well been casing the place for nefarious ends, but hell if Jethro cared what happened to himself anymore. Besides, Jethro found he didn't have time to worry about the consequences of running his mouth when his hammer slipped off-course and slammed right into the side of his thumb, [break][break]

“Fuckin' shit-!” [break][break]

He quickly pulled the injured hand back with a wince and a sharp exhale. Good fucking Arceus, did that shit hurt.

No family? So Jethro was all alone out here in this barren place. [break][break]

Well, him and his cows. A sidelong glance was spared on the MILTANK and TAUROS before Barnaby returned his cobalt gaze to the cowboy’s face, noticing the furrowed brow that scrunched his already taut features. [break][break]

“It must be quite lonesome out here for you, then.” Barnaby observed, sympathetic (though perhaps taking a step over the line of what was considered polite).[break][break]

Almost as soon as the words left his lips, however, a dull thud and loud exclamation from Jethro Haig announced yet another drawback to the rancher’s day. BARNABY FINCH immediately drew in a sharp breath, clucking his tongue like a worried mother hen as he released his RALTS.[break][break]

“Here, let us help.” He offered in a soft, placating voice.[break][break]

Kneeling down beside the other man, if allowed Barnaby would cradle Jethro Haig’s injured hand in his palms and gauge the extent of the damage. An already gruesome sight was beginning to emerge: a ballooning thumb and a nail bed darkened by pooling blood.[break][break]
